120 illegal immigrants hiding in a large goods vehicle were detained by the Bulgarian Police upon entering Sofia from Trakia motorway at about 4.00 a.m. on 29th of June. Five people were taken in custody for alleged human-trafficking, Sofia Police Office announced.
According to initial information, the detained migrants are believed to be Syrians, mainly families, about one third of them are children.
The police operation was carried out during the night on the old road near the village of Lozen.
The police stopped a taxi and a private car for a check and considered the behavior of the drivers as suspicious. The taxi driver refused to stop and even tried to hit the police car, said the head of Sofia Police Directorate, Mladen Marinov.
The route and the scheme of the traffickers are to be clarified, but Sofia police chief said it was likely that the group was trying to travel to countries in Western Europe.
