The monitoring of Bulgaria under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism could end only if sustainable results are seen in the reform of the judicial system, commented the European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Vera Jourova, who was on an official visit to Bulgaria on 8th of April.
The main topics of the discussions with Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, Minister of Justice Ekaterina Zaharieva and the Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov were security, judicial reform and fight against corruption.
The clearest sign of real reforms would be the increase of public trust in the court and the public prosecutor’s office, Jourova said. She added that she saw the required political will for achieving sustainable results in Bulgaria.
The establishment of a European public prosecutor’s office, which Bulgaria supports, was also discussed during the meetings. Other topics included the anti-terrorist legislation, which is in process of preparation, the measures Bulgaria takes in the fight against corruption and the judicial reform.
Jourova said that from the meeting with the justice minister Zaharieva and the chief prosecutor, she was left with very positive impressions that Bulgaria was on the right path. The results does not only mean adoption of new laws, but their effective implementation, part of which is achieving convictions of people in public office, accused in corruption, she added.
