Ivan Geshev was elected as the new head of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office on 13th of July.
Nine of the members of the college of Prosecutors of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) voted in favour of Ivan Geshev. Only one voted against.
In the past year, Geshev has been the supervising prosecutor on the case of the siphoning off of Corporate Commercial Bank (CCB). In June, a month before he was elected as the new head, the case on the CCB insolvency was transferred from the Prosecutor’s Office to the Specialised Prosecutor’s Office, which is a department that deals with organized crimes investigations. The investigation on the siphoning off of CCB is now against a criminal organized group led by the former banker Tzvetan Vassilev.
Speaking before the SJC members, Geshev outlined 2 priorities for his work – improving the microclimate and the statistical indicators of the Specialised Prosecutor’s Office.
Geshev was the only candidate for the vacant post. His competitor Andrei Andreev, who was the temporary acting head of the specialised prosecution, made a last minute decision to withdraw from the completion for personal reasons.
The Specialised Prosecutor’s Office was managed by a temporary acting head for nearly one year after the previous head Svetlozar Kostov was removed from the post by the SJC.
