Two Bulgarians Will Participate in EU Expert Group on Fake News

Two Bulgarians will participate in the high-level expert group at the European Commission, which by spring is due to develop a strategy on tackling the spread of fake news. Commissioner for Digital Economy and Digital Society, Mariya Gabriel, on 15th of Janaury presented the chair of the group, the Dutch professor of Intellectual Property, Copyright and Media and Communication Law at the University of Utrecht, Prof. Madeleine de Cock Buning.

Veni Markovski from the Bulgarian Internet Society and Dimitar Dimitrov from Wikimedia are the two Bulgarians who participate in the expert group of the European Commission, which will have to define the concept of "fake news" and present solutions for dealing with it. More than 300 experts, academics and journalists from across Europe have expressed their willingness to participate in the group's work, of which 40 were selected.

According to Gabriel, the phenomenon of "fake news" has to be considered in depth because it knows no boundaries and has strong political, social and economic consequences. Madeleine de Cock Beuning has promised everyone in the group "to work like crazy" so they can quickly present a strategy for coping with fake news.
