Pirogov hospital closed to admissions after 2 patients diagnosed with Covid-19

Two coronavirus cases were confirmed in Sofia in the evening on March 10. A 74 old man and his 66 year old wife tested positive today. They were admitted in Sofia’s Pirogov emergency hospital.

At 19:44 this evening, the samples of the two spouses tested at the National Reference Laboratory were positive.

The man arrived at Pirogov hospital yesterday. He had acute respiratory failure. He has previous history of lung disease. His wife is in serious condition.

Prof. Todor Kantardzhiev, National Centre for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases: She came to see her husband, but in a very serious condition, she fainted and doctors from the hospital immediately took measures.

The head of the national coronavirus task force said the woman was intubated and admitted to the emergency shock room.

The two had not travelled abroad.

The spouses were accommodated in the internal disease ward at Pirogov hospital.. The clinic will be now be isolated and disinfected. All person they have been in contact with are being identified. The director of the Regional Health Inspectorate is already there.

The total number of coronavirus cases in Bulgaria is now six. The first four were confirmed on March 8 in the Northen Bulgarian cities of Pleven and Gabrovo. There are now three outbreak areas in the country.

Pirogov has now cancelled the admission of patients. All emergency cases are diverted to the Military Medical Academy and Aleksandrovska hospital. Some of the medical staff of Pirogov hospital is equipped with protective clothing.

Currently, 89 people who were in contact with the two infected persons were identified. The procedure for their quarantine has began.
