22 organ donor situations in 2023 in Bulgaria
Thanks to them 48 patients got a chance for life
Twenty-two organ donor situations occurred in 2023, the Medical Supervision Executive Agency reported.
In the last such situation for the year was on December 31, at Sofia's “St Anna” University Hospital. The relatives of a 35-old brain-dead woman decided to donate her organs and save other people's lives.
In Bulgaria, 48 patients of which 42 Bulgarian nationals and 6 citizens of other EU Member States, received donated organ transplants in 2023, the Agency further says.
A couple of days ago, the Agency's Executive Director Ivanka Dineva presented Life Donor statuettes to the relatives of the donors.
The Health Ministry and the Medical Supervision Executive Agency offer their sincere condolences to the relatives of the donors and express their gratitude and respect for the noble decision to save lives at a difficult time. They also express their gratitude to the teams of the medical institutions involved in the donorship and transplantation process.
By December 7, 2023, 895 patients were on the waiting list for transplants: 806 for kidney, 17 for liver, 30 for heart, and 6 for lungs.
