30 motorists caught drink-driving and 9 under influence of drugs in a day during police campaign to tackle road traffic offences
The Bulgarian police checked 10, 560 motor vehicles within the framework of the specialised police operation for compliance with the Road Traffic Act, the Ministry of Interior said on January 7.
Controls were carried out on 12,257 motorists and passengers. 2,552 tickets and 599 statements for established administrative offence were issued. The operation focused on prevention of driving after use of alcohol, drugs and/or their analogues, as well as driving by unlicensed drivers.
During the past day, a total of 30 motorists were detected who got behind the wheel with blood-alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit - 14 of them drove with blood alcohol level of 0.5 to 1.2 per 1,000, and 16 - with more than 1.2 per 1,000, three refused testing. Nine drivers were found driving under the influence of drugs or their analogues, seven others refused to be tested, the police informed.
