A fishing ban comes into effect
It applies to the Bulgarian waters of the Black Sea, the Danube and rivers and lakes inside the country.
Temporary ban on catching fish and other aquatic organisms comes into force from 15 April. The ban is imposed in order to create optimal conditions for the natural reproduction of spring-summer breeding fish.

In the current year, by order of Minister Kiril Vatev, fishing for crucian carp is prohibited from 1 to 31 May inclusive in the Bulgarian section of the Danube and for goby from 15 April to 15 May inclusive in the waters of the Black Sea.
Turbot fishing will remain under ban from 15 April 2024 to 15 June 2024 inclusive. The ban also includes transshipment, detention on board, landing ashore and first sale during this period. .
For all other spring-summer breeding fish, the fishing prohibitions will depend on the altitude of the water bodies.
The order extends the ban on fishing for whitefish, pike and carp in the Bulgarian section of the Danube river until 31 May inclusive in order to protect the population of spring-summer spawning carp, catfish and other warm-blooded fish in the river and reduce their by-catch.
For recreational anglers, there are designated ponds where recreational fishing is allowed during the ban period. A list of the ponds open to fishing in 2024 by region is published on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
