A 57-year-old man killed a 42-year-old woman in her home and later committed suicide in another house in the town of Cherven Bryag, Northern Bulgaria.

The police received the call from the 112 emergency number at 6.57 on April 10.

The District Prosecutor's Office in Pleven has opened an investigation into the case.

At the initial stage of the investigation, it was established that the victim and the attacker had been living together since 2002 and had lived in Spain for about 20 years. In 2016, they got married. Towards the end of 2023, the woman returned to Bulgaria, together with their two children.

The woman twice filed for divorce with the district court, but subsequently withdrew the applications. In early 2024, she applied to the district court for a domestic violence protection order. Shortly thereafter, she withdrew the application, and the immediate order of protection was vacated and the case dismissed.

Until the time of the incident, the spouses and their two children, lived in a house owned and occupied by the woman's parents. On the morning of April 10, 2024, the victim's mother found her body in the family bedroom.

An examination of the victim's body revealed six stab wounds to the neck, the arm and the back. In the same room where the corpse was found, the investigators found a knife, with which, according to the initial hypothesis, the crime was allegedly committed.

The body of the man, who committed suicide, was later found in a house he had purchased months earlier.

Different versions of the motives, conditions and the means of committing the acts are being examined in the case, and further examinations of the scene, interviews with witnesses, the appointment of forensic experts and the collection of other evidence are to be carried out in order to establish the reasons that led to the crime. The investigation continues under the guidance of the District Prosecutor's Office-Pleven by an investigating police officer from the Police Department of the Ministry of Interior-Pleven.
