After protesters tried to stop premiere of George Bernard Shaw comedy: I see no problem in the play, Director of National Theatre said
I don't see a problem with the play. There was pressure to censor it before the play was realised, that's unacceptable, it wasn't a peaceful protest. I went to the protesters with love, I urged them to allow this play to be seen and then give assessments. We cannot judge whether there was provocation in the performance if we have not watched the paly, the director of the National Theatre, Vasil Vassilev, said on BNT's "The Day Begins " programme on November 8.
Minister of Interior: The action of National Theatre Director at the protest was inappropriate
In his words, the text of the play defends the dignity of the Bulgarian army.
"It does not humiliate it in any way. Let's not talk empty words, things are taken out of context. We are grasping for the word, not looking at the big picture, how the action is unfolding," Vasil Vassilev added.
We wrote a letter to the Ministry of Interior after an advertisement in front of the theater was defaced, we had concerns, provocations were pasted, Vasil Vassilev said.
According to him, some other people allowed politics into the theatre.
"I did not allow people to be fired for political reasons. I will not allow censorship in the theatre I run. Is that what we have brought our society to - if there is a problem, it is with the level of reading and comprehension. What happened last night was not a disgrace at the National Theatre, but in front of the National Theatre," Vasil Vassilev said, stressing that no provocation was sought with the staging of the play "Arms and the Man".
"Today, the paly will be performed. Culture is not the enemy of society, it makes it move forward. I don't understand the question about whether I should resign or not, I am defending my theatre. The audience decides whether a play is good or not good. Let the audience enter the hall and let the actors work," Vasil Vassilev said.
