Antibiotic resistance - what are the risks and how to improve treatment?

Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections could take the lives of more than 39 million people by 2050, according to a study which was commented in the BNT morning programme by Professor. Georgi Momekov, President of the Bulgarian Scientific Society of Pharmacy, on September 19.

He pointed out that these rates of resistance have been talked about for a long time, the rate has started to increase and the factors are terribly many.

"When making decisions we focus on bacteria - drug, and there are also socio-economic factors. Poverty, inequalities in medicine because there are areas where therapy is not adequate because there are no drugs and people are not getting adequate treatment and that will lead to a churning of resistant strains. Warming is bringing pathogens unknown into Europe. These warnings may just show the tip of the iceberg," noted Prof. Momekov.
