Tramcars donated under a Bulgarian-Swiss cooperation programme come into service in Sofia as of 24th of April. Colloquially nicknamed as "Guggummere" (Gherkins), retrofitted with low-floor center modules, they will replace the obsolete trams running on route 8 from Sofia’s Court Palace to Lyulin residential area.
Deputy Prime Minister for European Funds Malina Krumova, Mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova, and the Swiss Ambassador Denis Knobel, were the first passengers to take a ride on one of the "gherkin" trams.
The first 4 of the total 28 tram cars are already in operation. The rest are being equippedt. By the end of the year they will be gradually launched into service on routes 6, 8 and 12.
The project "Modernized Trams for Sofia" promises less traffic jams, less carbon emissions and better air quality.
