Borislav Mihailov resigned as president of the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) on November 27.

"Since I returned as the head of the BFU, all participants in the process have suffered huge criticism. Yes, the national team did not perform at the highest level. Everything else that depended on me has been fulfilled. I resign, I will not answer any questions. No club is asking for my resignation and I am elected by the clubs. It is only through the media that resignations are asked for," Mihailov told reporters.

Mihail Kassabov will temporarily serve as BFU president after vice-president Emil Kostadinov refused to take the post. A new meeting of the executive committee will be held on December 6 to set a date for a congress to elect a new president.

"The BFU has developed a system for the development of young talents, which will be presented in December. We have invested in making the Bulgarian championship as efficient as possible. The organisational structure of the BFS has been improved, we have implemented digitalisation, there has been over a 30% increase in TV rights, we have built 19 pitches, three more will be opened by the end of the year. We would have done even more if we had not become a relief valve. These are facts, and no one will say anything against them. I am proud of my team and thank them for their hard work in this abnormal environment," said Borislav Mihailov.

Headquarters Executive Director Borislav Popov shed more light on what happened at the meeting.

"At the meeting it was decided, due to the resignation of Mr. Mihailov, which is the basis for calling an early Congress for election of a new president, to convene a new meeting of the Executive Committee on December 6, at which the invitation to the Congress, the venue, the date will be adopted and preparations for a new Congress will be started - the technological time is at least two months. The Executive Committee cannot accept resignations. Mihail Kasabov will be the interim chair. There is an Executive Committee that is registered in the Commercial Register, it will be invited. I have no idea who Mihailov's replacements would be. The Executive Committee, which will accept a valid invitation, will be convened on 6 December. I have been appointed, I cannot say whether anyone else will resign. We will do our job in terms of the Statutes so that the next Executive Committee can be more relaxed. Any nominations will be accepted at a special election Congress. The moment the date of the next Congress is announced, nominations for a new president will be submitted," said Popov, who did not clarify what would happen if the first item on the Congress agenda is the vote on Mihailov's resignation and it is not accepted.

The special elective Congress is expected to be held in mid-March. However, questions still remain as to how legitimate the convocation of the Congress will be, as the old Executive Committee of the BFU is registered in the Commercial Register as at today.
