Borislav Sarafov is the only nomination for the post of Prosecutor General
On the last possible day of nominations for a new Prosecutor General, October 10, three members of the Prosecutors’ College of the Supreme Judicial Council nominated Borislav Sarafov for the post.
He remains the only candidate after the Minister of Justice did not make use of his power to nominate another candidate. Sarafov was nominated by Stefan Petrov, Plamen Naydenov and Svetlana Boshnakova.
After Sarafov's nomination was announced, Stefan Petrov presented a summary of the candidate's biography. According to him, Sarafov has extensive experience and the necessary professional qualities. Currently, Sarafov is acting prosecutor general after the term of his predecessor Ivan Geshev was terminated early.
Borislav Sarafov was born in Sofia in 1969. Graduated in law from the Higher Institute of the Ministry of Interior in 1994. Started his career as an investigator in Sofia in 1996 and then became deputy regional prosecutor in Slivnitsa (2001), prosecutor in Sofia District Prosecutor’s Office (2001-2006), prosecutor in Supreme Administrative Prosecution Service (until 2007) and Supreme Cassation Prosecutor’s Office (until 2011). He was the Head of the Appellate Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in 2011 (until 2017). Elected Deputy Prosecutor General in 2013. Elected director of the National Investigative Service in 2017; re-elected in November 2022.
What is the procedure from now on?
The candidate has until October 24 to present his concept.
Two Prosecutors’ College commissions have until November 26 to adopt reports on the professional and personal qualities of the candidate. They will be discussed at a meeting of the entire college the next day.
The hearing of the candidate and voting to elect the new Prosecutor General will take place on January 16, 2025.
