Bulgaria’s Prosecutor’s office and police prevented illegal trafficking of foreign nationals, the Prosecutor’s Office said on 29th of October.
Under the leadership of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in the town of Elin Pelin, an investigation was conducted on attempted unlawful assistance to a group of 36 foreign nationals and hooliganism, characterised by exceptional cynicism and impudence.
On 28th of October, a signal was reported to emergency number 112 around 10.00, reporting that a large group of foreigners was seen on a forest road between the village of Novi Han and Vakarel. It was identified they were migrants, claiming they were from Afghanistan, all men, at an age between 18 and 35. The migrants did not resist detention.
At the same time a car and a minibus appeared, supposed to transport the migrants to the town of Vidin, North Bulgaria. The minibus was with foreign registration and was driven by a person, whose identity has not been ascertained. Upon seeing the police, the drivers run off.
The driver of the car, Plamen Velkov, was detained, but the minibus driver managed to escape. An inspection was carried out on the site. Four of the foreign nationals were interviewed before a judge. Velkov now faces two criminal charges and has been detained by prosecutor for 72 hours. He made full admission. The work on the case continues.
