Bulgaria marks Midwives' Day - Babinden
On January 8, as per the new style calendar, Bulgaria celebrates the Day of Maternity Care, also known as Babinden (Midwives' Day).
Babinden is a traditional Bulgarian feast, celebrated on 8 January (or in some areas 21 January according to the Gregorian calendar), in honour of the women practicing midwifery. As part of the tradition, the rituals on this day are mainly related to paying homage to the elderly women who in the past helped young mothers at childbirth and served as midwives.
Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov visited the state hospital in Montana. He attended the discharge of the first baby born in the city for 2024. Montana region is one of the most affected by the demographic crisis.
