Bulgaria marks World Health Day

April 7 is World Health Day and healthcare professionals’ day. This is the professional holiday for all doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives, pharmacists and all healthcare workers who have dedicated their lives to the cause of protecting people's health.

7 April was declared Health Day in 1948, when the World Health Organisation was founded. Health Worker's Day has been celebrated in Bulgaria since 1964. There are 180 member countries of the World Health Organisation working on programmes aimed at solving health problems together with governments, UN specialised organizations and non-governmental formations.

Bulgaria has also been a member of the World Health Organisation since its founding and is actively involved in programmes to improve health services in the country, to eliminate acute infectious diseases, to protect the environment, to fight AIDS and cancer and to prevent deaths caused by smoking.
