BULGARIAN NATIONAL BANK SET UP A CENTRAL REGISTER OF BANK ACCOUNTS AND SAFE DEPOSIT BOXES

As of 3rd of January 2017, the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) operates a central register of the bank accounts and safe deposit boxes. The register is established in accordance with art. 56a of the Law on Credit Institutions and Ordinance 12 issued by BNB.

The new register contains centralized information submitted by banks and bank branches operating on the territory of Bulgaria, about the bank account numbers, holders and persons authorized to operate with the accounts, as well as information about the persons who rent safe deposit boxes and their authorized persons.

According to the Law on Credit Institutions, the information from the register will be available to the judicial authorities (courts, prosecution and investigation authorities), General Directorate "National Police" and the Chief Directorate "Combating Organized Crime" of the Ministry of Interior, State Agency for National Security, the National Revenue Agency, the Commission for Illegal Assets Forfeiture, bailiffs in enforcement cases and other bodies specified in Art. 56a of the Law on Credit Institutions, in relation to the performance of their duties.

Data will be also available to banks and branches of foreign banks operating in the country. Individuals and legal entities will have the right to receive information regarding the data about them contained in the register.

The documents on the activity of the central register on bank accounts and safe deposit boxes, as well the fees for obtaining information from the register are published on the BNB website.
