Bulgaria’s Traffic Police on May 10 stated enhanced inspections of lorries and buses. The police operation will be taking place until May 16 and will be conducted simultaneously in all EU member states.

Such police operations are conducted 4 times a year, and according to police officers have a good preventive effect.

"Inspections on the roads by more than one law enforcement agency lead to more effective traffic control and, in general, to improved road traffic safety and security. A similar operation was carried out between 8 and 14 February. The more typical violations found were: speeding, irregular driver's documents, non-use of seat belts, irregular vehicle documents," Chief Inspector Damyan Vladinov of the Traffic Police Department of the General Directorate "National Police" said.

Yesterday, many cars returned to the capital after the weekend. According to the Traffic Police, one motorcyclist was killed in the Sofia region. A total of 24 people were injured in road accidents yesterday.

The weather is getting warmer and traffic is expected to increase, which may lead to an increase in road accidents, traffic police warn.
