Ekaterina Zaharieva is officially the Bulgarian candidate for EU Commissioner. On Thursday, September 5, European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen, sent a letter to caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev thanking him for the proposed candidates and asking Bulgaria to officially nominate Ekaterina Zaharieva as the sole candidate. On September 9, Caretaker Prime Minister Glavchev presented Ekaterina Zaharieva as Bulgaria's candidate for EU Commissioner in response to the letter.

"I have the pleasure to officially propose the name of Ms Ekaterina Zaharieva as Bulgaria's candidate for EU Commissioner," Dimitar Glavchev wrote in his reply.

According to him, Zaharieva was chosen for her professional competence and personal qualities, in full compliance with the Treaty of the European Union.

In the coming days, Ursula von der Leyen is expected to announce the full composition and portfolios of the new European Commission.

The Brussels edition of Politico wrote today that the portfolio Zaharieva could be given is crisis management and humanitarian aid. Initially, a regional policy portfolio was discussed with Bulgaria, but according to Politico, Greece is also interested.

If the commissioners are approved by the European Parliament, the new European Commission should take office on 1 November, when the current one expires.
