The European Parliament voted to waive the immunity of the Bulgarian MEP Sergei Stanishev, as part of an accelerated procedure demanded by Stanishev, his office announced on 11th of March.
The office of Stanishev, who is also the President of the Party of the European Socialists (PES) says that he wants to clear his name and believes that the court will rule fairly on the “absurd” allegations against him.
In November 2014, Bulgaria’s Public Prosecutor’s Office forwarded a request for waiver of the immunity of Sergei Stanishev.
Sergei Stanishev is alleged to have lost secret reports of Bulgaria’s Ministry of Interior and the State Agency for National Security, in his former capacity as Prime Minister of Bulgaria, in the period from 2005 to 2009.
