Judicial Inspectorate self-initiates inquiry into media statements made by Prosecutor General and his Deputy

The Inspectorate of the Supreme Judicial Council has initiated a self-inquiry into media coverage in connection with the statements made last week by Prosecutor General, Ivan Geshev, and his deputy, Borislav Sarafov, containing allegations of behaviour undermining the prosecutor's independence and the prestige of the judiciary.

The Judicial Inspectorate informs that the case was assigned to an inspector selected by the random allocation system and commits to complete the inspection as soon as possible.

Bulgaria’s Prosecutor General determined not to step down, called on his deputy to resign

On Monday, the Prosecutor General, Ivan Geshev, talked about pressure on him to resign. He said former Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov, and Deputy Prosecutor General, Borislav Sarafov, were behind the attempt to remove him from office.

Shortly afterwards, Sarafov accused Geshev of stalling cases and of having privatised the Prosecutor's Office's holiday base in Borovets resort and asked for security guards to be provided to him because he was afraid of Geshev.
