Justice Minister: I am encouraged that Parliament proceeds with the bill on investigation of the Prosecutor General

The meeting of the parliamentary legal affairs committee continues, but the debates and voting on the law creating a mechanism for effective investigation of the Prosecutor General and higher accountability are over, caretaker Justice Minister Krum Zarkov told BNT on May 18.

If this law had already been in force and if it had been adopted on time, we would not have had a “war” like we are seeing now, Zarkov said. He is hopeful because the legal affairs committee has done something very important today - it has set the procedure in motion, the bill has been adopted by a large majority.

"All GERB-UDF, WCC-DB, MRF, BSP and TISP MPs supported the bill and committed to work on it - quickly. There were also calls for it to be seen as early as tomorrow in plenary. I think everyone understands how important the bill is," explained Krum Zarkov.

In his words, Ivan Geshev's opinion on this bill has not changed. The Prosecutor General's Office is against the bill.

"In the National Assembly lies the great responsibility to create the legal framework that is necessary for our country. It is necessary both for the people, for the rule of law in general, and in terms of our commitments and deeper integration into the EU. This is a long debate that has been going on for a long time. We have come to this stage of the procedure before, but it seems different to me today. It was also different in the Supreme Judicial Council, where topics were discussed - freely and responsibly, because only a few weeks ago this seemed to me completely impossible," the minister added.

The Prosecutor General and the Prosecutor's Office as an institution should not, cannot and must not speak with suggestions and innuendos, Zarkov further stressed, adding:

"You cannot speak from this position when you have all the power in your hands and if you have information, it has been gathered legally according to due process."

Krum Zarkov is confident that the truth about this whole saga will come out. It started with an explosion against the Prosecutor General on May 1 and turned into a verbal outburst and the truth needs to be fully unraveled and understood from all directions, he added.
