Legal Affairs Committee adopts mechanism for investigation of crimes allegedly committed by the Prosecutor General

The Legal Affairs Committee in the Parliament on May 25 adopted at second reading the mechanism for investigation of crimes allegedly committed by the Prosecutor General. It was adopted without debate and with complete unanimity.

The meeting was attended by Prosecutor General, Ivan Geshev, who took the floor at the beginning and said that the Constitution should not be touched with "greasy fingers".

The opinion of the Prosecutor's office is that the prepared texts are unconstitutional. The adopted amendments provide for the introduction of the post of investigating prosecutor, who would be able to check the Prosecutor General and his/her deputies.

They could be a criminal judge with the rank of a chief magistrate. It is envisaged that they will be selected from a list of judges who have given their prior consent to the role of investigating prosecutor.

They should meet several conditions, including a minimum of 12 years' experience and at least 7 years' experience with criminal cases. Another figure is introduced, that of a prosecutor who will supervise the investigating prosecutor. It is also proposed that the chief prosecutor will be appointed and dismissed by 13 votes of the SJC instead of 17.

"What I said has happened. I think that's obvious to everybody. What I will state on behalf of the Bulgarian Prosecutor’s office is that it is united and will continue to work in the same way, in the interest of the people and the people, despite political pressure. As Prosecutor General, I will complete my term in office and do what I applied to do - and that is to put everyone who has committed a crime in prison. The next thing I will say is that I am not afraid. I will not allow to be intimidated. It's not the magistrate community that's scared. The last thing I will say is that I will not participate in it, which is a foregone conclusion and which serves what I have described as the political mafia and what the Bulgarian people call political garbage, the oligarchy. I will not allow the Constitution to be touched with greasy fingers. God save Bulgaria!", Geshev said.
