Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns attack on Bulgarians before “Levski” football match in Skopje

Bulgaria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a position paper on July 28 that it strongly condemns the incidents of July 27, 2023 in Skopje, in which Bulgarian citizens, supporters of PFC Levski, were attacked and one of them was seriously wounded.

The injured Bulgarian citizen is currently in a stable but serious general condition and is recovering after surgical intervention at a hospital in Skopje. Representatives of the Bulgarian Embassy are in constant contact with the injured Bulgarian and his relatives, as well as with the local health authorities, the MFA said.

"We regret that the positive and sporting spirit of the match between PFC Levski and FC Shkupi was marred by acts of aggression off the football pitch. We expect the competent authorities in the Republic of North Macedonia to take the necessary actions for an effective investigation and administration of justice in connection with the serious incident. We once again stress the crucial importance of taking effective measures to prevent such acts of aggression and to ensure the safety of all citizens," the position paper added.

The Bulgarian "Levski" football fans arrested in Skopje will not face charges

Today it became clear that none of the 21 Bulgarians detained in Skopje will be charged. Skopje's Foreign Ministry also condemned the aggression against our compatriots, while RNM Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski called for sport and politics not to be mixed.
