New speed control cameras will be installed at critical locations in Sofia
Speed control cameras will be installed at key locations in Sofia, said the capital's mayor Vassil Terziev on February 7.
"We have agreed with the Traffic Police to place stationary traffic speed cameras at critical locations, the mayor of Sofia, Vassil Terziev announced on his Facebook account.
The mayor listed the places specifically. "Slivnitsa" Blvd.; "Cherni Vrah" Bulvd., ul. "Tsar Boris III" in the route to the district. "Knyazhevo"; "Bulgaria” Blvd.; "Tsarigradsko shose" Blvd., etc.
"Sofia Municipality will prepare the plans and placement of the cameras and the Sofia Directorate of the Ministry of Interior will provide the devices.
Additionally, between 8 and 12 traffic police teams with mobile speed cameras, the so-called tripods, which the Sofia Municipality donated to the Ministry of Interior in recent years, are already working every day on the territory of the municipality," Terziev wrote.
"Chief Commissioner, Lyubomir Nikolov, and I have decided to have regular meetings between the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia Directorate of the Interior and to work together for a safer Sofia," the mayor wrote.
Vasil Terziev has also asked the police to take additional measures for road safety around schools and kindergartens in Sofia. In a meeting with the Deputy Mayor for Transport, Ilian Pavlov, and the Director of the Traffic Police Department, it was discussed which, according to the traffic police specialists, are the spots around the city where the largest number of violations and road accidents occured.
Accidents with pedestrians can be reduced with good lighting at intersections, Terziev said, adding that pedestrian crossings can be safer if bumps, raised crossings and additional traffic lights are installed.
The mayor drew attention to the car chases in the city and demanded systematic control and serious sanctions for violators. Improper parking should be curtailed as much as possible because it often impedes both pedestrians and drivers' visibility. Inspectors from the Urban Mobility Centre already regularly monitor such cases, the Mayor wrote.
