Number of women in managerial positions in Bulgaria is increasing

Women in leadership positions in Bulgaria are increasing, although they remain fewer than men. In 2023, their number reached 68,000 which is by 3,200 more than the previous year. This is according to the Gender Equality Report 2023, which was approved by the government.

Last year, the proportion of women serving on management boards increased from 14.8% to 18.3%. The difference in salaries between women and men in 2022 was 13% in favour of men.

The report shows that last year, the employment rate for women aged 15-64 was 67.4% and for men 73.9%. A difference is also reported in the average amount of the pension for length of service. For men it was BGN 942 and for women BGN 765. Women, however, received a pension for an average of 27.6 years, which is more than 7 years more than men.

In 2023, the average social security income was BGN 1,445.55. For men the amount was 1488,15 BGN. - 6.2% more than for women.

The report reflects the results of the implementation of policies in five priority areas: equality between women and men in the labour market and equal level of economic independence; reducing gender pay and income gaps; promoting equality in decision-making processes; combating violence and protecting and supporting victims; overcoming gender stereotypes in various areas of public life and sexism.
