For the first time in Bulgaria, reflectors were installed with the help of a drone on power lines in hard-to-reach places near Burgas. The main purpose of the devices is to protect birds from electric shocks.

“Electricity Distribution South" will welcome storks this year with 310 new platforms for safe nesting, located on poles of the power distribution network. Through the platforms, the company provides safe nesting spots for the storks on the power poles. In addition to those installed last year, the total number of platforms installed by the electricity distribution company to protect the lives of storks since 2009 amounts to 3,440.

Storks are known for frequently using electricity poles as their nest-site location. These nests are often in close proximity to the wires. In many cases, this may cause damages to the power lines and the birds. By placing the platforms, the nests are raised to a distance of about 1 metre to ensure safe distance from the wires. This not only protects the lives of the birds, but also reduces the potential risk of the nests catching fire, as the metal platforms prevent the nests from falling between the wires of the power grid.

The safety measure was taken before the spring migration of the birds and within the timeframe approved by the Ministry of Environment and Water - until 1 March. The initiative of “Electricity Distribution South” to install the platforms has been coordinated with the relevant regional environment and water inspectorates.
