PM Borissov: Bulgaria strongly supports Albania on its path to EU
Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov on November 19 had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama. The focus of the conversation was the position of Bulgaria on the negotiating framework for the accession of Albania and the Republic of North Macedonia to the EU.
"Bulgaria strongly supports Albania on its path to the European family. We believe that you have shown your commitment to European values, responsibility and motivation to move forward and you have our support," said Prime Minister Borissov to his counterpart.
Prime Minister Borissov also noted Bulgaria country is among the strongest advocates of the EU enlargement process and therefore raised the topic high on the European agenda during the Bulgarian presidency of the Council of the EU in 2018.
"Because the European perspective is the strongest motivation for a transition to democratic governance and a market economy in the Western Balkans," Borissov added.
Regarding the European integration of the Republic of North Macedonia, Borissov pointed out the position of Bulgaria and noted that Bulgaria is one of the countries that has most insisted and wanted the Republic of North Macedonia to become part of the EU. In this context, Bulgaria's efforts have always been focused on reaching consensus on issues important to both countries.
"Unfortunately, such a commitment is not observed on the part of the Republic of North Macedonia. We are ready to continue the talks and actively work in implementation of the Neighbourliness agreement," Borissov told the Albanian Prime Minister.
