PM Nikolai Denkov: Ukraine will become a NATO member when this is possible

Ukraine will become a member of NATO when possible. The requirements for accession should be met and the members of the Alliance should agree, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov said on July 11 in Vilnius, where he is participating in the NATO Summit.

We do not support the use of cluster bombs, but Russia has systematically used such bombs in Ukraine and Syria. They can't blame Ukraine for also looking for a solution. This is a political issue, there is a war, one side is using them, we do not support it, but we cannot condemn that Ukraine wants to use such bombs, PM Denkov said.

In the Prime Minister's words, the risk of the war expanding beyond Ukraine's territory is low, but igniting a conflict in the Western Balkans remains a risky issue because of Russian influence there.

NATO leaders gathered in Vilnius to make the biggest revision of the alliance's defence plans since the Cold War. Two other important issues - Ukraine's NATO membership and Sweden's stalled membership - are the focus of the meeting. Last night, Alliance chief Jens Stoltenberg announced that Turkish President Erdogan would support Sweden's NATO membership.
