PM Petkov: From July 1, Bulgaria will receive the full quantities of gas agreed with Azerbaijan
From 1 July, Bulgaria will receive the full quantities of gas agreed with Azerbaijan, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said at the question time in Parliament on May 13. He also confirmed to the MPs that an American company will supply gas to Bulgaria without an intermediary and at prices lower than those of Gazprom.
"The good news today is that what until now was tied to the implementation of the Greek link in order to have a supply of Azeri gas, will no longer be a fact. We will be able, from 1 July, to get our full supply of Azeri gas before the link is finalised."
In his words, every crisis is an opportunity and these opportunities are now opening for Bulgaria.
"These opportunities should be used in the smartest way. The map of Europe is being redrawn now. Part of the investments we have planned is to unblock the construction of some of our motorways. There are some advanced payments, but no motorway. We have real steps and we want to make, especially northern Bulgaria, which at the moment is in isolation with only two bridges on the Danube, having no motorway," added Kiril Petkov.
The Prime Minister added that in addition to the gas connections, Bulgaria will have an unprecedented installation of batteries at system level.
"Nobody has done this so far. We are actually making a new modern Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant (PSHPP). These are new concepts. We're making investments in human capital - you know how many STEM centers we're opening now. We have opened the Stambolov Fund, where Bulgaria will invest in its smartest people enrolled in top universities if they come back to work for Bulgaria," said Kiril Petkov.
Regarding his upcoming visit to the Republic of North Macedonia, he said that no specific documents are expected to be signed.
"The exact composition of the meeting has not been finalised yet, but one thing is certain - we continue the constructive dialogue, but nothing specific will be signed on this date," Petkov said.
