Police officer was arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia
A police officer from the General Directorate for Combating Organised Crime (GDBOP) was detained at his workplace on February 5 during an operation by the Internal Security Directorate of the Ministry of Interior and the Prosecutor's Office, BNT learned from sources.
The arrested person is reported to have exported classified information to Russian agents.
According to the sources, the State Agency for National Security (SANS) is working on the case.
The actions of the law enforcement agencies are being conducted under the guidance of Sofia City Prosecutor's Office.
According to the BNT sources, the detained employee provided classified information to a former diplomat at the Russian Embassy in Sofia, who was declared persona non grata some time ago.
It emeged later during the day that the detained officer had exported information about investigations in which there is evidence of violations of the sanctions regime involving companies with Russian capital, BNT has learned.
Some of the investigations in which information was leaked were international and concerned schemes to circumvent sanctions against Russia.
According to information gathered by the investigators, the police officer synchronized his actions with a SANS officer who also leaked information to a Russian agency.
