Pollution in the Maritsa: Nitrogen compounds found in its waters

Analysis of the river water at the town of Dimitrovgrad has proved high concentration - 360 times higher than the ecological norms - of chemical substances such as nitrates, nitrites and ammonium nitrogen.

Health minister Kostadin Angelov explained Wednesday that probes were made into channels, running to the river Maritsa. Water supply for some of the settlements in the region would be restored right after the release of intermediate results, he promised.

Still, it is uncertain that this water would be drinkable. Local inspectors will take samples from each water tap to find if the water is clear and safe for drinking.

Pollution was detected at a collector, property of NEOCHIM fertilizer plant in Dimitrovgrad, said ecology minister Emil Dimitrov.

Health minister Angelov and ecology minister Dimitrov visited the site of the pollution which was reported yesterday after the mysterious death of 28 cows.

Water supply for all villages in Dimitrovgrad region was restored in the afternoon.
