President Radev vetoes a provision of the law amending Judiciary System Act
President Rumen Radev on September 15 returned for a new discussion in the National Assembly paragraph 1 of the Law on Amendments to the Judiciary System Act, adopted on September 3, 2020.
MPs changed Article 28 of the law for the second time this year, retaining the possibility of promoting some former members of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) after the end of their term.
In May this year, the Supreme Court of Cassation referred the so-called "career bonuses" to the Constitutional Court on the grounds that it violated the principles of separation of powers and independence of the judiciary.
The Head of State points out that the new wording of Article 28 continues the contradiction with constitutional principles, including equality and the non-admission of privileges based on personal or social status (Article 6, paragraph 2 of the Constitution).
