Prime Minister Denkov to MEPs from LIBE: We want to make Bulgaria a normal European country

We want to make Bulgaria a normal European country. The whole government is working towards this goal, we have made great progress in just four months. With these words the Prime Minister acad. Nikolai Denkov addressed representatives of the monitoring group of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) in the European Parliament, the government press office said on October 12.

The Prime Minister stressed that the main goals of the Bulgarian government were the country's accession to Schengen, the Eurozone and the OECD. To this end, a lot of efforts have been made. Acad. Denkov reminded that the European Commission recently closed the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism for Bulgaria and Romania.

"This is a clear signal of the success of the rule of law reforms that our country has carried out," the PM said. He noted the contribution of prestigious institutions such as the Basel Institute, the European Commission and the Venice Commission to this process.

Acad. Denkov is optimistic that by the end of the year the amendments to the Constitution will be adopted, aiming at greater independence of the judiciary. The LIBE delegation, headed by MEP Sophie in 't Veld, is in Bulgaria for meetings with representatives of various institutions regarding the rule of law, the fight against corruption and media freedom.
