Protesting energy workers and miners lift key roads blockade
The protesting coal miners and energy workers on Trakia motorway, the Pass of the Republic and on the Sub-Balkan road officially announced the end of the road block. Traffic will be restored within hours.
After 14 days of blockade on Trakia motorway, at exactly 20:00 on October 12 the protesters announced that they were ending their civil disobedience. According to their trade union leaders, although the territorial just transition plans submitted by Bulgaria have not been withdrawn from the European institutions, the protest has nevertheless given publicity to the problems in the energy sector.
The people who were the last to leave the tented camp were not very optimistic about their future, but they are firm in their positions and will express them in an effective strike planned for the winter.
The protesters stowed their tents, cleared the tarmac of stones and other items left behind. Traffic will be restored after police make a safety check of the route.
"We are withdrawing from the blockades. We don't want to create inconvenience for the Bulgarian society anymore. We will just thank everyone, but not the government. We will continue with our next protest actions, whatever they may be," one of the protesters said.
