Romania gives green light to restore Ruse-Giurgiu ferry service
A ferry line could connect Ruse and Giurgiu as early as this summer. At its regular meeting today (28 June), the Romanian government approved a decision to restore the Giurgiu-Ruse ferry service. The reopening of an old crossing point, which was in operation until 2005, will be carried out after the construction of the infrastructure, the provision of staff and the necessary communications, according to the decision document.
The ferry will transport at least 200 long-haul trucks per day in one direction. It will take around 12-15 percent of the traffic on the Danube Bridge. This will considerably relieve the traffic on the Danube Bridge, which is currently extremely congested due to the summer holidays and the emergency repairs that started two weeks ago.
On 29 April, the governments of Bulgaria and Romania signed an agreement in Bucharest on the opening of the Ruse-Giurgiu ferry crossing at the Bulgarian-Romanian border.
