On 17th of February, Sofia City Court acquitted the main shareholder of CSKA football club, Alexander Tomov, on the charges for embezzlement of nearly 36 million BGN from the football club and from Kremikovtsi steel plant.
Tomov and the other three defendants were found not guilty on all embezzlement charges. The allegations of the prosecution were that Kremikovtsi steel plant’s assets were transferred to CSKA football club when the club was purchased by Vassil Bozhkov in 2007. The other scheme described in the indictment was that the funds from a loan of 3,5 million euro for CSKA sank into offshore accounts.
This is the second time the court case was considered at the first instance court.
4 years ago, Alexander Tomov and Ivan Ivanov were sentenced to 9 years imprisonment, while Alexander Garibov and Bozhko Bonev were acquitted. The appeal court returned the case to the first instance court because of contradictions in the motives.
Today, the prosecutors refused to comment. They said they would appeal the sentence.
Tomov commented his acquittal as “light in tunnel”.
