Specialised police operation prevents 275 migrants in attempts of illegal crossing of Bulgarian-Turkish border
Ten Moroccans and two Bulgarians were detained this morning in the area of Sredets during a large-scale specialized police operation to prevent illegal migration along the Bulgarian-Turkish border on June 29. A total of 275 migrants in 13 attempts of illegal crossing of the state border were prevented.
Gendarmerie, national police and military personnel took part in the specialised operation. Migrant trafficking and attempts to cross the Bulgarian-Turkish border have increased in comparison with last year, the Border Police said.
The specialised operation will continue until necessary.
"About 700 people are involved in the operation. They are deployed in the areas of border police stations Malko Turnovo, Sredets and Elhovo. About 25 checkpoints have been set up in those areas, the rest of the teams working on the state border are over 70. Migrants are transported in absolutely all types of vehicles you can think of, including ambulances, vans, trucks, mini-buses, station wagons," said Commissioner Ivaylo Tonchev, Head of the Border Police Department in Elhovo.
