The repair of the Danube Bridge at Rousse may be completed earlier than planned

The major repair of the Danube Bridge at Rousse may be completed earlier than the planned deadline, which is two years, said caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev on August 2. Together with the caretaker Minister of Development and Public Works Violeta Koritarova he inspected the repair works and the traffic on the Bulgarian-Romanian border.

One of the measures discussed with the road haulage industry to curb the kilometre-long queues of cars and heavy goods vehicles at the country's border crossings is to separate the flow of vehicles to EU member states and third countries.

"The fence of the facility has been dismantled and will be returned once it is restored to the same condition. There will be no violation because the entire bridge is a cultural monument. The panels are being replaced, the renovation of the site is going very well," said Dimitar Glavchev.

"The Danube Bridge has not been overhauled since it was built 70 years ago. At the height of the tourist season, traffic from cars passing through it increased by 25%.

"There is not a single minute of unused crossing time in either direction. Synchronisation is also being done with the Romanian side and will be so throughout the tourist season. By the end of September, the Ruse - Giurgiu ferry will be launched. If this does not happen, we will have talks with our Romanian colleagues again," said Violeta Koritarova, caretaker Minister of Regional Development and Public Works.
