Vice President Iliana Iotova attended the opening of the new school year at the National Vocational High School for Computer Technologies and Systems in Pravets, the press secretariat of the Head of State announced on September 16.

"The long tradition of computer technologies starts from Pravets, the rise of this education starts from this high school. This tradition has withstood all difficulties over the years and has its future," the Vice President said in her address to the students, teachers and parents.

Yotova described the high school as a guarantor of successful realization:

"Together with the Technical University of Sofia and the business community, you have built the best model for development."

"Our future lies in your success, you are the people who will develop these technologies not only Bulgaria but the world. Wherever you choose to build your life, never forget that you are Bulgarians and you owe your success to the National Vocational School of Computer Technologies and Systems in Pravets," the Vice President addressed the students.

"The education and the fate of these young people is in your hands. In the technological age, it is even more important that your mission is to build them up as good people, to teach them to distinguish good from evil, to educate them in values. No matter how powerful a machine is, no matter how powerful the world of artificial intelligence is, humans will never be displaced."

The Vice President quoted His Holiness the Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniel as saying that school is a place where, apart from knowledge, children learn to respect the people close to them and to be part of a community.

"Let us educate our children to be part of the Bulgarian community, which has its ideals and values," Iliyana Iotova urged.

In her address, the Vice President highlighted the Bulgarian tradition of celebrating the first day of school.

"There is no other country for which the first day of school is such a big holiday. It is part of the long tradition of the revival of the Bulgarian state and the Bulgarian nation. The respect for education in Bulgaria has its deep roots," Yotova said.

The Vice President toured the specialized classrooms at the high school and the museum where the first Pravets computers are kept. The first International Olympiad in Informatics was held at the high school in the 1980s.
