WCC-DB to GERB-UDF: The next move is yours

“We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria” (WCC-DB) on March 21 came out with an official position, distributed to the media, in which they insist GERB-UDF to take responsibility for their actions and to give a plan for a way out of the crisis.

Fulfilling a mandate to form a cabinet requires confidence in the figure of the prime minister. This is the fundamental prerequisite required by the Constitution. In the last 9 months, we had started to build basic trust on a few basic principles:

1. Mandates are implemented as national, which means joint; ;

2. All decisions on the composition of the Council of Ministers are taken jointly by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister;

3. All compromises are justified only to the extent that they guarantee reforms and are in the interest of the whole society.

We in WCC-DB are aware of the need for Bulgaria to have a regular government to implement the reforms outlined in the draft agreement. We remain accountable to the fate of the country and ready to share the responsibility for joint governance. This can only happen if the formula of trust is restored and the real implementation of reforms is guaranteed. This can only happen with a shared team that keeps its commitments, with strong character, resilience to pressure and leadership qualities so that it can tackle the enormous challenges Bulgaria faces today.

We have viewed Nikolai Denkov and Mariya Gabriel as guarantors of the implementation of this formula and have invested enormous effort in building confidence in their integrity and sustainability.

On 19 March 2024, Mariya Gabriel returned a fulfilled mandate without a final signed agreement on joint governance and without a final agreed composition of the Council of Ministers. This action has drastically broken the formula of trust and puts the country in the face of a new political crisis.

Dear colleagues from GERB-UDF, it is your responsibility to say how we can continue from here on. You acted unilaterally in total contradiction of all agreements and in violation of the trust placed in you for the fulfillment of a joint mandate for formation of a government with WCC-DB. Take responsibility for your actions and propose a specific plan that is adequate to the crisis you have created.
