Whooping cough case registered in Montana district
Montana district (Northwestern Bulgaria) reported a case of pertussis.
It was registered in a 6-year-old child in a kindergarten in Montana. The case is the first for the year in the district. All antiepidemic measures have been taken, said senior inspector Elena Todorova from the Regional Health Inspectorate in the city.
"The child has a cough, no fever, and is in good general condition. An epidemiological survey has been carried out. The contacted children have been placed under medical observation for the quarantine period of the disease," she explained.
The last time there was pertussis in Montana region was in 2022 - one case.
"Pertussis, known as whooping cough is an acute respiratory tract infection characterized by severe hacking cough. The disease may affect children at different ages. It is transmitted via droplets of respiratory secretions, from the larynx, trachea, when breathing, coughing," explained Elena Todorova.
Whooping cough is included in the national immunisation schedule. The vaccination is in three doses and is administered in three consecutive months after the newborn turns two months old. Booster is administered at the second, sixth and twelfth year, the RHI clarified.
