The Supreme Judicial Council on October 24 approved Ivan Geshev for Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor. He was the only candidate for the post.
Twenty members of the Supreme Judicial Council voted in favour of his nomination and four against.
The nomination is subject to approval by Bulgaria's Head of State, President Rumen Radev.
On that basis, the SJC submits a proposal to the President to issue a Decree for the appointment of Ivan Geshev to the post of Chief Prosecutor.
The hearing started at 10:00 am and went on for almost 10 hours. It was broadcast live on BNT.
In his first interview after the election, he told BNT:
I am a person who carefully considers all criticisms and I change in cases where I think the criticisms are constructive, justified and correct. I, personally, am impressed by Judge Sekerdzhiev's opinion. I do not agree with his view and his reasons for not supporting me, I do not think he is making the right assessment of me, but I am impressed by the honest and frank analysis made from his point of view, I will personally try to show that his judgment of me is incorrect and I will gladly make an effort to show it is wrong. We must continue to work the same way we have over the past 2-3 years, showing that there is no difference between Bulgarian citizens with a low social status and Bulgarian citizens with a high social status, when they have committed an offense or crime, Ivan Geshev said.
