A case of viral meningitis registered in Montana
A case of viral meningitis was reported by health authorities in Montana (North-Western Bulgaria). The case is the first for the year. The epidemic situation in terms of influenza and acute respiratory infections is within the usual levels for the season.
The case of viral meningitis was confirmed last week in a student from Lom, specified Elena Todorova, chief inspector at the Regional Health Inspectorate of Montana said.
"The child was discharged from hospital and is currently at home. The contact children from the class are being monitored," she added.
Viral meningitis is an inflammatory process of the sheath of the brain or spinal cord, the cause of which can be viral and bacterial infections. Last year, there were only two reported cases of viral meningitis in Montana.
There were 22 cases of acute infectious diseases in the region last week. Of these, 11 had chickenpox, two scarlet fever and six enterocolitis. There were 37 flu and ARI patients, one more than a week earlier, the Montana hygiene inspectorate added.
