Beekeepers seek urgent help from the state over drought
Beekeepers are asking for urgent help from the state because of the prolonged drought during the summer months. The logical question is whether there will be a change in the price of the new honey harvest.
Because of the prolonged period of drought during the summer, the bees return to the hive without pollen and the combs, which are usually full at this time of the year, are empty this summer. Beekeepers feed the hives extra, which costs 30 BGN per colony. The amount is unaffordable for beekeepers who worry that they will not manage without state aid. They insist that the state cover half of these costs. Otherwise, because of the financial losses, a price increase is expected.
"We need help urgently, we are literally at a loss. We have calculated that we need 10 - 15 BGN per hive. This is not a small amount," explained beekeeper Ralitsa Petkova.
"We need to find a long-term solution to our problems," appealed beekeeper Rosen Atanasov.
Beekeepers are worried that if they do not receive state aid, many bee colonies will be destroyed.
