Bulgarian firefighters in readiness to join Greek collegaues in the battle against wildfires
The Bulgarian firefighters who went to Greece to support their colleagues there are in Thessaloniki and ready to respond and help in the battle against wildfires.
During their mission to support their Greek collegaues currently battling the huge blazes, the Bulgarian firefighters have been sharing experiences about the way firefighters work in Greece and the working methods in Bulgaria. This will help for greater efficiency when working together. In the words of the Bulgarian firefighters in Greece, the specific thing about this mission is the different vegetation, high temperatures and low humidity.
"The colleagues who are mainly on duty here are sent to the places, where there is the greatest need for them, and there are actually almost no officers on duty here, so we are here in their place to assist them, to carry out the duties and intervene if necessary. Temperatures are over 40 degrees per Celsius, humidity is extremely low, it hasn't rained for a long time, everything around is yellow and there is a constant wind that would make things terribly difficult if a fire were to occur. There is a lot of coniferous vegetation, both tall and large trees and low scrub vegetation. Also, olive trees are quite a challenge as they are also quite highly combustible and difficult to extinguish," said Kaloyan Donchev, head of Bulgarian firefighters team in Greece.
