Daniel Mitov declined offer for the post of caretaker Foreign Minister
Daniel Mitov on April 19 announced his refusal to accept the offer of caretaker Prime Minister, Dimitar Glavchev, to serve as caretaker foreign minister.
In his words, by refusing to issue a decree appointing him to the post, President Rumen Radev has failed the test of his geopolitical orientation and now the responsibility lies with the President - "the foreign minister is his".
"I would like to thank Glavchev for his trust and Borissov for his understanding of my possible role in the caretaker cabinet. I accepted, not because it is a personal ambition to be a foreign minister - I was a foreign minister. I accepted because it is important in this situation to have a foreign policy that is pro-Atlantic, pro-NATO, pro-European. That is why I accepted.
In this situation, it is clear to me that I should not turn into an apple of discord or into any figure who divides society or prevents the institutions from doing their job.
So certainly - I withdraw my endorsement to be Foreign Minister and I would like to underline once again the fact that in this situation, in a changed Constitution, in which party balances are being sought and in a caretaker government with representatives of all significant parties, it is clear that it is not a problem for politically and party-coloured people to hold such positions.
My disappointment is with the position of the “We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria” in this case. Instead of supporting our nomination, they chose to follow the logic of President Radev and support his position. So I can reassure Radev - as “We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria” were with him when he was re-elected, so now we can safely say to him that they are with you now, Mitov commented.
