Development of nuclear energy remains a top priority for Bulgaria, caretaker Minister of Energy says
The development of nuclear energy remains a top priority for Bulgaria, caretaker Minister of Energy Vladimir Milanov said on June 5 in the coastal city of Varna. He pointed out that the diversification of nuclear fuel for the fifth unit of Kozloduy NPP is already a fact, adding that next week its planned annual maintenance is expected to be completed and the reactor to be put into the country's electricity system.
At the same time, work is underway on the design of the plant's seventh and eighth units. The minister said there is already a firm commitment from a bank that will provide the financing, as well as from two technology companies that will implement the project.
According to Malinov, the project for the two units is important not only for Bulgaria but also for Europe. According to him, 30% - 40% of the costs that will be incurred for the implementation of the seventh and eighth units should remain in Bulgaria.
Regarding the mines in the Maritsa basin, he pointed out that measures are envisaged to achieve predictability and sustainability of this business, which is key for the country's energy security. There is also a commitment to provide one billion BGN over four years for the process of reclamation and sustainable operation of the mines. Vladimir Malinov stressed that one of the main objectives is to preserve the employees of Maritsa and their expertise, including in the period of the energy transition, as qualified personnel with education and knowledge are an asset.
Minister Malinov promised that the deficit accumulated in the 'Security' Fund of the electricity system will be covered and recalled that the increase in the price of electricity is significantly below the annual inflation rate for the country for the previous year.
