Easter eggs wax decorating tradition proposed to be added to UNESCO list
The Easter eggs, decorated by using wax technique, are proposed to be added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
This initiative was taken by the History Museum in the Bulgarian town of Velingrad, where the only permanent exposition of wax decorated eggs in the country is located.
Along with the tradition of egg dyeing for Easter, a local tradition has developed in Bulgaria’s Velingrad - the eggs' designs are drawn in wax rather than painted.
This age-old tradition is preserved in almost every family in the town, and the museum has been organising workshops for children and adults for years.
